Super happy to introduce something new today! Each month we will have an interview with a member of our Banana Bunch modelling team. Every dog (and the human behind the dog!) in our team have unique personalities and some pretty amazing stories. We hope these interviews will be a great way to introduce everyone to those personalities and stories!
To get things started off, we interviewed Obama and his human!
Tell us a bit about how and when you met Obama!
When I started researching Greyhounds and rescue organizations around Chicago I found 4 Greyhound Racers, and there he was on the "Adoptable Hounds" page! I went through the adoption process and when they asked me who I was interested in, I named him first along with a few others just in case he was adopted before I got to meet him. When my application was approved, his foster mom brought him to my house along with some other hounds to see if we were a good fit! Obie explored a little and then plopped on the carpet and didn't want to move! When the adoption group told me he was a sweet, polite boy who had a rough start in life, I knew I had to have him! He's shy around strangers, but once he picks his people he is the most affectionate 80lb lap dog there is!
If you had to pick one story to tell someone about Obama who has never met him, what would it be?
Obama loves his people. When my partner comes to visit, he always calls my cell to let me know he's at the door so I can let him in. So now whenever Obie hears my phone ring, he jumps up and runs straight to the back door! Anytime of day he assumes his papa is there! It's so sweet. I also love to tell people about how "go with the flow" he is! We take him camping, and he's even been on a motorboat twice! We take him everywhere we can, and he's such a good sport about it. As long as he's got something plush to lay on, he's content!
What are Obama's top three favorite treats?
Obama LOVES treats in general! He's a very food-motivated guy. His favorite treats in particular are salmon flavored biscuits, chicken jerky, and his daily dental chew! He also comes running to the freezer when he hears the ice maker! He loves ice cubes year round!
If you had one piece of advice for anyone considering adopting a Greyhound (specifically a retired racer!), what would that be?
Do your research! Be patient! Most Greyhounds are retired racers, unless for some reason they were unable to race, which means they are only familiar with the kennel lifestyle they were brought up in. So they've never seen things before that we take for granted, like stairs, hardwood floors, or even other breeds of dogs. That doesn't mean they don't adjust quickly to these things! They are happy to learn. I chose to adopt from a foster only organization for these reasons, to make sure as a first time grey mom I'd be paired with a pup that was already adjusting to retired life! I recommend buying "Retired Racers for Dummies"! It's an easy read that has helped us a bunch!
There is also a huge community of Greyhound loving folks out there; check out the numerous Facebook groups with people ready to help and give advice to newbies! Also please do not hesitate to reach out to any hounds you like on Instagram! I am always happy to talk about the adoption process and how to best be prepared! If you don't think you're ready for a full time commitment, adoption groups are always looking for volunteers and fosters. There are lots of ways to help, not just adoption!
How does Obama tell you that he's ready for a walk?
Greyhounds are famous for doing "Zoomies" - basically he will sprint up and down the hallway in a spurt of energy! It's how we start every day!
Is Obama an only child/pet?
No! Obama has a sister, Gertrude Stein. She's an older lady cat who has a lot of attitude. She is the boss of the house, since she's been a part of the family for longer. Obie is not interested in her (which is a good thing for Greyhounds) but Gertrude doesn't like that, she lives for attention! She loves snuggles, almost as much as food. She is not on Instagram, but she shows up in our stories on a regular basis!
Does Obama have a favorite song, and maybe more importantly, how are his dance moves?
Obama's favorite dance move is sleeping. :) He sleeps 18-20 hours a day!He doesn't have a favorite song, but he does love TV! He likes watching Portlandia and Rupaul's Drag Race. No lie, he literally sits there and watches!
Do you have any tips for dogs who are trying to grow their Instagram or other social media presence?
Engage your audience! Make friends through stories and just have genuine interest in the well-being of others. Be unique! Find what kind of posts you're good at, and stick with it! Make quality images, quality over quantity!
